Aftermarket bolts, boards, and other accessories provide little value to most newer markers. With the better engineered markers, it's practically eliminated third party upgrades. You'll find equipment at every tier that utilizes the principals of this design. Most problems are easily resolved with replacing an Oring instead of changing springs or replacing cup seals or pins. They make for good platforms and are much easier to fix and troubleshoot. Where blowback poppets once numbered the field, spools are everywhere.
There's also a large amount of spool valve guns (like the Matrix) these days. If you want the best and fanciest, that's still an option but you're not going to see the night and day different between low/high end as there once was. Paintball being stagnant for years really forced manufacturers to churn the mid and lower tiers of markers.
Now, you can buy something brand new for $400 that will do everything you need and shoot superior to your old marker on every way. No longer do you need to pay $1200+ for a competitive marker. There's a lot of change in regards to electronic markers and it really favors individuals like you (yes, you!) who are returning to the scene. Paint is worse, markers are better, and safety is a focal consideration these days. That doesn't means things haven't progressed, just that you won't be shocked on what you see either. There's change, sure, but unless you last played with a Nelspot and shop glasses you will be comfortable on the field. If you last played in 2008, you'll look at the field and players and see more of the same. You'll probably hear both sides of the table on this but as someone who's been playing for over 20 years, I'd say not all that much.

Or maybe you just need an update to get you in the right direction.
Maybe you played local tournies a long time ago and you have no idea what they're doing today. Rather the idea is you had some stuff stashed in your closet or basement and want to know if it'll hold up. Welcome back! This is not written for people playing their first game but I'm sure some information can be gleaned and prove to be useful. The idea behind the below is you're returning to action after some time off.
